New all-in-one headset and growing content library enable surgeons to learn latest procedures, make a difference in frontline care and help improve patient outcomes
At the Johnson & Johnson Institute, we believe the future of surgical training is powered by technology. Virtual Reality (VR) represents a leap forward for our digital education programming, and we’re proud of our partnerships with companies such as Oculus and OSSO VR to help us further advance our innovative solutions.
“We’re enthusiastic about VR because it allows us to focus on the safety of procedures and predictability of outcomes in a way that’s more time efficient, cost effective and measurable,” said Sandra Humbles, Vice President, Global Education Solutions for Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices. “Surgeons can learn by doing and even build muscle memory at their own pace with this fully immersive technology before even stepping into in the operating theater.”
With the small and portable yet mighty headset from Oculus, the days of bulky VR headsets with lots of cords and adaptors are gone. It is easily transportable so we can bring the training right to customers. All of our new training modules are being developed in partnership with Osso VR for use with the Oculus Quest and supported by the Oculus for Business platform. We have content available today to support joint reconstruction with a growing content library that will span across specialties, which will allow us to provide surgical training with a clear clinical focus, objective performance analytics and multiplayer functionality.
Like an athlete training at the gym, even experienced surgeons can keep their skills sharp or learn an innovative procedure with VR. Our training modules span a wide range of objectives, from teaching an early learner to exposing experienced surgeons to new or advanced techniques. VR powers continuous learning at every level of a surgeon’s career.
Through our new modules, we will be able to bring effective, hands-on training to hospitals and facilities around the world. Our teams will work with these facilities to tailor the training to individualized needs, whether that’s including VR in an in-service for the whole OR team or delivering a local training event for a group of residents at an academic medical center.
We also believe that VR has never been more urgent, as COVID-19 has completely changed the world as we know it. Many of us are working or learning from home or have been otherwise forced to dramatically alter our schedules or workstyles. Technology that empowers remote learning is more crucial than ever before.
With our VR training offerings, we want to ensure that we’re making a real difference in frontline care. We’re looking forward to seeing our training programs in action at hospitals and academic medical centers around the world, because we’re true believers in their potential to have a positive effect on patient outcomes.
