The field of orthopaedic trauma is constantly evolving thanks to medical advances that are helping more patients regain mobility and reclaim quality of life. To give surgical residents hands-on experience with these innovations, the Johnson & Johnson Institute brought its mobile teaching lab to universities and hospitals across the U.S. Dubbed the TEC Mobile Education Experience Tour -- for Trauma, Extremities (foot and ankle) and Craniomaxillofacial (CMF)- the education and training focus in these three areas with an emphasis on the safe and effective use of DePuy Synthes products.
Comprehensive Training Delivered to Doorstep
When the TEC Mobile Experience pulls into a medical center parking lot, it converts into a teaching theater with four, fully equipped lab stations. Residents are then given the opportunity to learn and practice techniques and procedures using cadaveric simulation training. Because there’s no need to travel, it’s easy for attending surgeons to bring their residents to the program and engage in team learning together.
VR Builds Skills Prior To Entering Lab
Virtual Reality (VR) represents a leap forward for digital education programming, allowing residents to learn at their own pace with this fully immersive technology. That’s why before even stepping into the TEC Mobile Education Experience Lab, residents are encouraged to practice with VR headsets and learning modules from the JNJ Institute. The equipment is delivered to each participating medical center about two weeks prior to the mobile lab showing up. Residents are also asked to enroll in the Future Leaders Online Learning Program for Residents and Fellows, where they can access on-demand education on a range of other clinical topics.
The goal of the TEC Mobile Experience is to increase access to simulation lab training, especially at a time when there may still be some restrictions on in-person learning and travel.
“We are committed to supporting the future orthopaedic leaders of tomorrow. This type of practical learning experience can help residents to hone their early skill development,” said Thomas Graham, Manager for Professional Education. “We greatly appreciate the support of our faculty and sales consultants in delivering this quality educational experience.”
