As part of our response to COVID-19, the Johnson & Johnson Institute expanded its collaboration with Advances in Surgery (AIS) to connect surgeons and other healthcare professionals around the world to critical information and educational programs focused on advancing patient care during the pandemic.

The most recent program, titled “Shaping the Next Normal in Elective Surgery,” featured healthcare experts from around the world who discussed how to balance patient and HCP safety with fiscal responsibility. More than 45,000 HCPs and hospital administrators from 150-plus countries tuned in to view the webinar live.

The discussions focused on efforts from China, Spain and the US, and how the represented hospital systems have tailored plans to safely and gradually resume procedures in coordination with local governments and stakeholders. Conversation turned to how hospital systems are responding to the needs of their caregivers, with Cleveland Clinic Chief Nursing Officer Dr. Kelly Hancock sharing her organization’s unique in-home childcare offering. Panelists also discussed how the pandemic will permanently alter the world of healthcare at large, including the accelerated adoption of telehealth. Finally, they highlighted lasting memories and key lessons learned during these trying times, including how the pandemic emphasizes what a crucial role public health plays in society.

“Right now, we’re all living through an unprecedented time that demands extraordinary efforts from those of us in the healthcare industry. Surgeons, doctors, researchers, caregivers, and employees of companies like Johnson & Johnson have a huge role to play—and my job is to inspire our employees to rise up to the toughest challenges, and go above and beyond on behalf of our patients and customers,” said J&J CEO Alex Gorsky. “The pandemic reminds us of the importance of having robust public health systems. For far too long, this has not been a top priority. Moving forward we must ensure public health initiatives are taken seriously, as they can significantly impact our health and economy.”

The webinar sessions included:

The Chinese View: Participants included executives from the Beijing Friendship Hospital, including President Shutian Zhang, as well as the CMO, CNO, an orthopedic surgeon, and a general surgeon.

The European View: Participants included executives from Hospital Clinic Barecelona, including CEO Josep M. Campistol, as well as the CMO, CNO, an orthopedic surgeon, and a general surgeon.

The U.S. View: Participants included executives from Cleveland Clinic, including CEO Tom Mihaljevic, as well as the CMO, CNO, an orthopedic surgeon, and a general surgeon.

The role J&J is playing in shaping the Next Normal: Alex Gorsky interviewed by Dr. Steven Wexner.

This webinar is part of an expanded collaboration between Johnson & Johnson Institute and AIS to connect HCPs to a virtual COVID-19 Resource Center. HCPs can access important information from multiple public sources, updated in real-time, as well as free online courses and training programs to help everyone perform their work in the safest and most effective way possible.
